If you’ve been to one of the sunnier All Tomorrow’s Parties and witnessed pale, black-clad festival-goers picking their way through the holidaymakers at Camber Sands, then you’ll have some idea of the culture-clash at the heart of Goth Cruise. Nottingham-based filmmaker Jeanie Finlay spent a week on board a Caribbean cruise in the company of 150 goths and 2500 ‘norms’, in an effort to peek behind the makeup and dispel some of the myths about goth culture. A broad spectrum from across the US (and Wrexham) are represented including a pair of newlyweds, a Gulf War veteran and a shy cross-dressing computer programmer, and on the whole they seem to spend far more time on the dancefloor and in the hot-tub (‘Goth soup’) than gazing into the abyss. There’s a nice detour to the Whitby Goth Festival, and a soundtrack including The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Fields of the Nephilim with a bit of calypso thrown in.
Showing with: Colour of Blood (Dir: Uli Hesse, 14 mins) Portrait of three people with a passion for blood, including horror magician Dr Gore and a 50 year-old vampire called Gloria.
