Dir. Tomas Alfredson

Sweden 2008,  114 mins

Feat. Kåre Hedebrant; Lina Leandersson; Per Ragnar

Pale 12-year old Oskar (Hedebrant) lives in the suburbs of Stockholm with his mother, and dreams of taking revenge on the bullies at school.  Eli (Leandersson), a girl of the same age, arrives in the neighbourhood with a mysterious father-figure called Hakan (Ragnar).  Against the background of a spate of violent murders, the two children begin to forge an unlikely bond during latenight encounters in the playground.

Adapted by John Ajvide Lindqvist from his own hit novel, Let The Right One In is an astonishing piece of work.  Both a tender coming-of-age tale and a full-throttle horror movie, the filmmakers use every tool in the box - performances, photography, music, effects - to keep us gripped throughout.  Even the title is great (taken from Morrissey’s ‘Let The Right One Slip In’.)  A pointless remake is already in the works, but this is the film you need to see.

Showing with:

There Are Monsters (dir: Jay Dahl)

Excellent 10-minute Canadian chiller, selected and introduced by Virginie Selavy from Electric Sheep.
