Jim le Fevre Phonotrope talk

A whole year back animator Jim le Fevre brought his marvellous Phonotrope device along to Unpacked. He’s recently posted the talk he did that day up on his site. (We can’t embed it here, cos we’re not vimeo plus.)

Alex Smith at Unpacked

An exciting late addition to the Unpacked lineup which we wanted to share — filmmaker Alex Smith will be taking part in the Puppetology session. He has made some great videos for the likes of Peaches, Coldplay and the Darkness as well as one of our favourite promos of recent times, the underwater mayhem of In the Blood by Pivot. Next Friday he’ll be in Birmingham with sculptor/filmmaker Astrid Goldsmith to talk about how they created a shark-movie in their back-yard using puppets, props and a stills camera. This is the video itself – apparently banned by myspace for its bloodthirstyness!

Unpacked runs from 10:30am to 4:30pm at The Bond in Digbeth on Friday 26 March, and during the day Businesslink are also doing free one-to-ones offering advice to freelancers and small businesses. You don’t have to be signed up for Unpacked to do one of these, just drop us a line if you’d like some more info.

Fast Forward

Flatpack’s big Friday night this year comes courtesy of Synth Eastwood, a Dublin outfit famed for their open-submission art events. They’ll be hoovering up the sights and sounds of Birmingham in the days leading up to Fast Forward, and filling the Rainbow Warehouse with music, animation, performance and all sorts of multi-media gubbins. Here’s a wee taster:

Fast Forward With Synth Eastwood from Synth Eastwood on Vimeo.

(You may spot the Fairbrother timelapse images in there somewhere.) We’re really looking forward to this one. Clark makes wondrously dense-but-melodic music on Warp, Hugh Cooney is a very funny youtube renegade who we’ve mentioned before, and Gangpol & Mit bounce tunes and cartoons back and forth between each other to make barmy live shows like this.

PS: You can also see G&M and Synth Eastwood talking about their work as part of Unpacked.
