Last week we launched a tasty new 7 Inch Cinema site. As well as the obligatory blog and event info it's a fine archive for stuff we've done in the past and includes some resources on Flatpack.
Flatpack takes a year out

The Flatpack Festival will be having a year off in 2008. Rather than scramble together the resources to put on Flatpack no.3 we felt that for the future health of the festival and indeed our sanity it would be wise to take a year out in order to do some long-term planning. A big thank you to all funders, contributors and punters for supporting us thus far, and do watch this space for further news…

The winners of our Norman McLaren competition were Lucy Baines of Moseley and Paul Davies from Stirchley. Hooplah. Lucy gets a bloody fabulous 7-disc DVD boxset of McLaren's work, and Paul gets a McLaren goodie bag. Thanks to all who took part and for your constructive comments.

Exactly a month on from the festival, and we can't stop gazing at pictures of it. Or reading the nice things people said. Perhaps it's time to move on...
Convalescence

It's all over. It was all over a couple of weeks ago actually, but it can take a while for these things to sink in. Thanks for all the lovely feedback. We are sifting through the debris, and once we've found the black box we'll back here with a full post-mortem and hard-hitting photo evidence. In the meantime you can keep an eye on 7inch.org for upcoming 7 Inch Cinema activities.
Opening day dawns

Awoke at 5am thinking about laminated signs and XLR-phonos. Is it too late to cancel the whole thing? I guess so. Well, we'd better get on with it then...
While I'm here, just a note to let you know that last year's Flatpack favourite Rabbit (Run Wrake) will be showing as part of the Animate! programme on Friday night.
word of mouth...

...is a wonderful thing. One day the festival will run purely on word-of-mouth and there will be no more negotiating Wolverhampton's one-way system and dodgy double-parking. Thankfully the press are helping out, with a piece in the Guardian Guide on Saturday and in Metro today. (If anyone has a copy can you hang onto it for us?)
Some nice extras - as well as his new Jeffrey Lewis video Mark Locke will be unveiling a brand-new Mistys video on Saturday, and there will be a modest gaming tournament to accompany High Score for all you competitive types. For those who say there is too much to choose from, we say Tough! Spin the bottle. Pin the tail on the Donkey. Etc.

Just a note to confirm some of the people dropping into Birmingham during Flatpack -
> Oliver Rihs and Olivier Kolb, director and producer of Black Sheep, will be here to introduce their movie;
> Emyr Williams from Ankst jets in from Wales on Sunday to talk about Faust;
> Justin Doherty from the Filmstock fest is up for the premiere of his short Clandestine as part of Channel 1;
> Matt, Joost and Guy will be babysitting Harrachov throughout the weekend;
> David Rudkin is here to shed some light on the bewitching Penda's Fen;
> Tom Brown and Daniel Gray are chatting about their Sundance-selected student short t.o.m.;
Plus all manner of other filmmakers, musicians and charlatans roaming the city's streets...

A rollercoaster week last week, full of the disasters and victories that make festivals such fun. Our email database imploded, with over 1,000 contacts disappearing into the ether (if you'd like to join up or rejoin and get regular updates on Flatpack news, type in your address on the left). On the plus side we got the programme off to print and online, and the buzz so far has been excellent. The Flatpack promotion budget is not massive, and any support you can give spreading the word virtually or physically in your area is much appreciated - and may be rewarded in the form of free tickets. Drop us a line if you'd like to help out.
