Dogs in Space

Dir: Richard Lowenstein

Australia 1986, 104 minutes

With: Michael Hutchence, Saskia Post, Nique Needles

A spaced-out, bittersweet portrait of Melbourne’s post-punk ‘little band’ scene, born out of a legendary three-week queue for David Bowie tickets in 1978. The script was based on the director’s own experiences, and in search of authenticity he arranged to move back into his original house in order to recreate the chaotic squat at the heart of the film. Best known nowadays for featuring the chiselled features of a young Michael Hutchence in the lead role, Dogs in Space is ful of memorable moments including a pretty convincing acid trip and a scary man with a chainsaw.
